House TalkN is a fun lookiloo at houses, houses, houses. It will answer pressing questions like, "When folks build a McMansion on a small lot, what are they compensating for?" or "Was the real estate agent drunk when they staged this house?" or "Why don't the Smiths' ever leave their drapes open when I am on a harmless walk-by?"

HouseTalkN'sTop Bedrooms!

My bedroom is the most neglected room in my house! Not only is it upstairs and out of sight, but it is underused.

I don't hang out in there. I don't knit in the rocker. I don't write the great American novel at my desk. And, I certainly don't meditate on the rug. I am usually zipping in and out, grabbing a sweater, changing into more sensible shoes, throwing clean laundry into the drawers or taking a timeout to repeat "child abuse is wrong, child abuse is wrong..."

Maybe these bedroom lookiloos will inspire me to jazz up my bedroom.  If you could wave a magic wand, which bedroom would you choose?

By The Light Of The Moon...

The lighting around here lately has sucked been less than desirable for taking photos. I kept putting off taking indoor photos, hoping for a day of beautiful fall light streaming through my windows.

Last night, I gave up on good lighting and took some photos of my dining room table.

"Blah, Humbug" could be the title.

I thought that by changing out the lamp with my bargain special from "Tuesday Morning" would jazz things up a bit...

It quickly resembled the children's book If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.  I decided that if you change the light, you should change the pictures. If you change up the pictures, you should change the tablecloth. If you change the tablecloth, you should change the tablescape. If you...see how this goes?

I love rugged burlap! (Or, I'm too lazy to sew the edges)

I started out with a pumpkin "line-up"...ehh, no.

I can fit a white pumpkin into anything!

This seemed too "Oh, wise and holy pumpkin!"

Oh, yes, indeed. My wild brood will maintain this look.

I finally settled on this...
By 3:01pm today, homework central returned and this is a distant memory.

A Room Of Her Own...

Come on bloggers- let's throw some money together and make this our "bloggers retreat!" We could take turns flying our private jets to our cottage for long drinking blogging weekends!
What say?

Living Room

Pretty in Pink

Emmy-winning actress and Dancing with the Starsrunner-up Kirstie Alley is selling her frilly, feminine cottage in Maine, which she purchased for $1.15 million in 2003. Located in the quaint community of Islesboro Island, which is only accessible by ferry or air taxi, the property overlooks the West Penobscot Bay and peaceful wooded land. The five-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom home was built in 1993, but its cozy nooks and charming fireplaces evoke a historic property. The actress, who adorned the home's interior with pink walls, delicate curtains and copious floral patterns, has listed the residence for $2.35 million. UPDATE (10/5/2011): Kirstie Alley has reduced the asking price of her Islesboro home to $1.99 million.

Come on, I'm only 1 million dollars short!

"First, Lord: No Tattoos."

Source: None via Amy on Pinterest

“First, Lord: No tattoos. May neither Chinese symbol for truth nor Winnie-the-Pooh holding the FSU logo stain her tender haunches. May she be Beautiful but not Damaged, for it’s the Damage that draws the creepy soccer coach’s eye, not the Beauty. When the Crystal Meth is offered, may she remember the parents who cut her grapes in half And stick with Beer. Guide her, protect her when crossing the street, stepping onto boats, swimming in the ocean, swimming in pools, walking near pools, standing on the subway platform, crossing 86th Street, stepping off of boats, using mall restrooms, getting on and off escalators, driving on country roads while arguing, leaning on large windows, walking in parking lots, riding Ferris wheels, roller-coasters, log flumes, or anything called “Hell Drop,” “Tower of Torture,” or “The Death Spiral Rock ‘N Zero G Roll featuring Aerosmith,” and standing on any kind of balcony ever, anywhere, at any age. Lead her away from Acting but not all the way to Finance. Something where she can make her own hours but still feel intellectually fulfilled and get outside sometimes And not have to wear high heels. What would that be, Lord? Architecture? Midwifery? Golf course design? I’m asking You, because if I knew, I’d be doing it, Youdammit. May she play the Drums to the fiery rhythm of her Own Heart with the sinewy strength of her Own Arms, so she need Not Lie With Drummers. Grant her a Rough Patch from twelve to seventeen.Let her draw horses and be interested in Barbies for much too long, For childhood is short – a Tiger Flower blooming Magenta for one day – And adulthood is long and dry-humping in cars will wait. O Lord, break the Internet forever, that she may be spared the misspelled invective of her peers And the online marketing campaign for Rape Hostel V: Girls Just Wanna Get Stabbed. And when she one day turns on me and calls me a Bitch in front of Hollister, Give me the strength, Lord, to yank her directly into a cab in front of her friends, For I will not have that Shit. I will not have it. And should she choose to be a Mother one day, be my eyes, Lord, that I may see her, lying on a blanket on the floor at 4:50 A.M., all-at-once exhausted, bored, and in love with the little creature whose poop is leaking up its back. “My mother did this for me once,” she will realize as she cleans feces off her baby’s neck. “My mother did this for me.” And the delayed gratitude will wash over her as it does each generation and she will make a Mental Note to call me. And she will forget. But I’ll know, because I peeped it with Your God eyes. Amen.” -Tina Fey

Our Houses Hold Our Stories...

Last year, my friend sent me this clip and I have cried my eyes out viewed it no less than 762 times.

I watched it again, yesterday.

One of my kiddos had one of those days. In our house, if one person has one of those days, we all have one of those days.

Our house has been the backdrop - for the good days, the "it's time to go to the hospital" days, the funny days, the grumpy days, the "clean that room or I might have to kill you" days and for those days.  It's our soft spot to fall.

Here's to all of our "ordinary days" to come.

HouseTalkN's Top Entryways!

When I was looking for inspiration for my "Mudroom Makeover", Pinterest (my bff) supplied me with an endless stream of entryway/mudroom images.

Our entryways provide the first impression to our guests. Mine used to say, "LLBean was here and threw up backpacks and lunch boxes!" Now, this impression is reserved for the backdoor entry only.

Take a lookiloo at some of my favorite entries- what do you think they say about the homeowner?

This one might say "I'm chic and I like to look at myself in my big ole mirror."

"I love company and would never be able to hide behind the peephole."

Your turn- what do these entries say?
