House TalkN is a fun lookiloo at houses, houses, houses. It will answer pressing questions like, "When folks build a McMansion on a small lot, what are they compensating for?" or "Was the real estate agent drunk when they staged this house?" or "Why don't the Smiths' ever leave their drapes open when I am on a harmless walk-by?"

"I Don't Know How She Does It"

The movie title "I Don't Know How She Does It" could be used to describe Karen Devine
Karen can juggle a kitchen remodel, rewire a chandy for a friend, plan a PTA meeting, look like a million bucks at all times and still have her own house in order...with four kiddos. (Cutiedoodle triplets and an awesome almost high schooler!)
Even though Karen designs and decorates beautiful spaces for a living, she will be the first to tell you that FUNCTION trumps pretty. (This could be the influence of her talented engineer hubby!)
While I was shooting pictures for "A Devine House Tour", I snapped a few organizational pictures to share with you.  Karen's house is efficient, functional AND purdy!

Dish soap and cleaner kept in "olive oil" dispensers.

Keep your favorite cookbook on a stand.

Even the dog food gets a purdy home!

Potato-functional. Globe-purdy.
Work station.

A buffet can serve as a drink station.

Built in drawers under the window seat- no wasted space.

Everything has a place...eliminating clutter.

Double Pantry

Everyone pitches in! This chalkboard lists each family member's chores.

This is the catchall at the basement entry door. Each kiddo has their own cubby.

Cubbies- functional. Glass detailing- purdy.

How do you marry function and purdy in your home?

  3. We use a lot of baskets in our house = I find it's a great way to keep up with the clutter and looks nice. But holy hanna, I covet that cubby she has!

  4. My favorite way is to customize built-ins to fit your family's needs. Example - family room cabinet / Entertainment center with storage for DVDs, game system and remote *stuff*, big drawers for blankets, well-thought-out wiring plan to hide cables, and a light paint color. Dark furniture = dust nightmare. Also - drawers are the BEST thing ever. So much better than just cabinet doors and shelves. I totally violated all of my above "rules for purdy" when we moved into our new house, and it's a freaking mess.
