House TalkN is a fun lookiloo at houses, houses, houses. It will answer pressing questions like, "When folks build a McMansion on a small lot, what are they compensating for?" or "Was the real estate agent drunk when they staged this house?" or "Why don't the Smiths' ever leave their drapes open when I am on a harmless walk-by?"

Construction Instruction...

This is a tutorial for all of you who are dealing with construction issues. Anything from a kitchen remodel to a complete overhaul of your streets.
Even when we know that it will all be worth it, getting through the process can be a nightmare.
Here are a few pointers on how to make it through without jumping off your roof.

My John Street friends have been dealing with this for weeks months.
1. Embrace the scene. Move happy hour to the scene of the crime. Offer catcalls to the workers. They like it.

2. Share a good book or invite them in for a book club meeting. Books bring people together.

3. Play your cards right, and you will make new friends along the way.

4. Be fair. Settle your disputes in a positive way. If you really think the foreman is unreasonable about that "no commoners on the equipment" rule, challenge him to an arm wrestling match. That is fair.

5. Use good communication skills. Good eye contact is key.

6. Be modest in victory. Nobody likes a showoff.

Just remember to stay positive. We are all working toward the common good.
I'm ok, you're ok.

  11. This was needed. We're having bathroom reno right now. Ack! All the people tearing my house apart are great and sweet and cool, but it's still miserable. I may take a stool up there and just sit with a margarita and a cheese stick.
