House TalkN is a fun lookiloo at houses, houses, houses. It will answer pressing questions like, "When folks build a McMansion on a small lot, what are they compensating for?" or "Was the real estate agent drunk when they staged this house?" or "Why don't the Smiths' ever leave their drapes open when I am on a harmless walk-by?"

Keepin' It Real at HouseTalkN

I was so happy to get on the "pop culture is bad for women" bandwagon with a group of pals last week. I was really feeling superior to those bitches women who participate in and perpetuate the so-called "Mommy Wars".
Just when the moral high ground was feeling nice and cozy, a pal lumped Pinterest and house blogs into the mix of culprits. "Everything is always perfect and beautiful and it just adds to the Are You Mom Enough? firestorm."
Say what?
I went a little Al Pacino. "Are you talkin' to me?"
Sure, I write a house blog.
Sure, I spend days strung out on a few minutes on Pinterest.
But..but...but...we are all smart enough to know that these are just purdy images that are staged and that just beyond the shot is a pile of all the junk we swept aside for the picture? Right? RIGHT?
Here is my "keepin' it real" penance.
In case you think that I walk around looking like this everyday:

Here is how I usually roll:

If you think my house always looks like this:

Help me, Lawd. I can't believe that I am showing this to you but I want to be welcomed back into the righteous fold.
Here is -gasp-my son's never before seen room:

There you have it. Full disclosure.
Keepin' it real at HouseTalkN.
Now, I have to go badger my son about that @#$% room.

  2. I always feel a bit inadequate when looking at all the pretty photos, but in real life, that's just not the way it is. That's why I won't get a webcam, don't want folks seeing the 'real' me. :)

  9. Well, you probably know how I feel bout the "Mommy Wars"...since it was all over the place last month. And you probably know how I feel bout "staged" settings, though that's next month.
Head's up: wait until your son gets his own apartment.

  12. I wrote a similar post a month or so ago. I completely admit that if I turned the camera around from the "pretty picture" you'd see a giant pile of toys and Lord knows what else I had to sweep aside just to get a decent picture.

  17. Not to worry, my teenage daughter's bedroom looked like that for years. When she moved out and we cleaned up the room, we were all shocked at how big the room actually is.....it had been years since we had seen the floor. It was always covered in clothes and piles of books. My kids are grown and gone now and the bedrooms remain perfectly clean- kind of sad- would much rather have the messy rooms and kids still around. Those years go by so very quickly so I say embrace and enjoy those messy kid bedrooms while they are there.

  18. My daughter moved out and I kept begging her to take what she left, or to at least clean up the mess and sort out what she wanted saved. She never did so I tossed 15 bags out and saved 1 box for her. That should give you some Idea. I still can't imagine that she actually took things with her. How she found anything was belong me. Loved the "casual" look.

  20. Don't worry. My home at apartments for rent in leesburg va looks almost like yours. I have a busy schedule at work and I barely have time to fix my cabinet.

  21. Okay...I found it after reading through a couple of your hilarious posts that I couldn't resist...and I told Mr. I was coming up to bed 30 minutes ago. Oops! What I love about you is no matter what, you're always keeping it real. I think my daughter's room looks worse than your son's but my daughter is on her way out (tissue, please?)and I'll reclaim the room for out of town babushka wearing friends. ;)
